Ban on new uranium mines near Grand Canyon extended - 00:42 am

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Obama administration on Monday extended a temporary ban on the filing of new uranium mining claims near the Grand Canyon with an eye toward protecting 1 million acres and giving the federal government more time to study the economic and environmental effects of mining. The Interior Department has been analyzing whether to prohibit new mining claims on up to 1 million acres near the park, or allow the mining industry to add to the thousands of claims already staked in the area. A temporary ban enacted in July 2009 was set to expire next month but will now last until December. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar visited the Grand Canyon and drew on its history to...

Country diary: Wasdale, Lake District - 00:50 am

Wastwater and Great Gable when seen from the lower slopes of Irton Fell. Photograph: Tony Greenbank for the Guardian I went up Irton Pike to see the rare butterfly that is a speciality of these fells: the mountain ringlet, first sighted on Red Screes in the 1800s. My last interest in a Lakeland butterfly was being scared witless by the...

Woolworths, Myer, Westfield intensify attack on industrial relations laws - 04:00 am

THREE of Australia's retail giants have joined the criticism of the government's workplace regime, warning that it is damaging a key part of the economy and leading to excessive wage costs that could trigger job losses. Contradicting Julia Gillard's claim she does not encounter many businesspeople raising the Fair Work system as a frontline issue, shopping centre owner Westfield is warning that high labour costs are contributing to increasing prices for consumer goods and could lead to job losses in the retail sector that was once the nation's largest employer. Georgia senator champions probe of Peace Corps worker's murder - 01:18 am

WASHINGTON -- WASHINGTON-The senator looks at the murdered girl's face every day. He's drawn in by her eyes, bright and wide and full of sweetness and hope, as she cradles a little girl on her lap. She could have been his daughter or even one of his nine grandchildren. That's what Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., thinks when he looks at the ghost in the frame. So he's kept the photo of the murdered Peace Corps worker closest to him at his desk - even closer than the photos of his own children scattered on the marble mantle in his office on Capitol Hill. Just over two years ago, Peace Corps worker Kate Puzey, the president and valedictorian of her high school class who had a passion for empowering...

Bahraini leadership faces new claims that torture took place in hospital - 00:37 am

The government of Bahrain faces fresh allegations that it systematically tortured people it suspected of taking part in demonstrations against its autocratic rulers earlier this year, and of deliberately undermining the country's health system as 20 doctors go back on trial today for their supposed role in the protests. One of the world's most respected humanitarian organisations, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), alleges that security forces loyal to the tiny Gulf state's authoritarian leader, King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, regularly beat hospital patients who had injuries that could have been sustained during the rallies that started in February. It also says that, after working alongside...
